Angels are all around us, all the time, in the very air we breathe. ~ The Angels’ Little Instruction Book by Eileen Elias Freeman, 1994

Our house has taken on quite an angelic appearance this Christmas season. Quite by coincidence.  It turns out that the universe has conspired to force upon us our first true family tradition; it started in 2009 when our first-born decided to hang a glass angel on the Christmas tree so that his ‘sister’ (the baby I was bearing at the time) could share in the festivities with us.

The child that was born was a boy and he, like his older brother, was named after an Archangel. We then bought angel tree decorations for each of our sons.  Then, we bought tree angels for our pets – past and present…

Aside from the obvious decorating solution we have stumbled upon, we can now extend this theme to our guests by asking that they don’t buy presents for us, as a family or as individuals, but rather bring an angel when they visit over the holiday period.  This way we’ll always have the memories of shared time – a meaningful and sentimental way to remember that Christmas is about family, friends, love and hospitality.
